Abigail Solomon-Godeau is a critic and art historian whose theoretical interests include Marxism, Post-Modernism, Feminism and the representation of women in the visual arts. She specializes in Nineteenth-century photography and has also made significant contributions to debates in critical theory and contemporary art practice.

Her essays have appeared in Afterimage, Art in America and October. A selection of her written work is featured in Photography at the Dock: Essays on Photographic History, Institutions and Practices (1991). In this work, Solomon-Godeau examines the role of cultural institutions, art historians, collectors, and dealers in constructing the history of photography. She offers a revisionist approach that incorporates a counter-history of the medium founded in feminist thought.

Solomon-Godeau’s book, Male Trouble: A Crisis in Representation (1997) addresses the shift in focus from the male nude as traditional subject of figurative representation to the central role that the female nude would assume from the later part of the Nineteenth century up until the present day.

Solomon-Godeau is currently a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
