“I’m getting rid of everything. Everything will break apart, everything will bust, will fade, everything will get dirty.” – Nicolas Baier, Artist Statement, Liquidation Niko & Friend.

Montreal based artist Nicolas Baier brings an innovative approach to self-portraiture. Intrigued by how we represent ourselves through objects with which we surround ourselves, Baier uses the seemingly mundane stuff of his own surroundings as inspiration. By deconstructing and reconstructing the space, his unique method of object placement plays the ‘real’ of the photographic image against the surreal quality of the rebuilt representation. Unlike most digital photography, no attempt is made to fool the viewer by seamlessly merging and juxtaposing imagery of his large-scale grids.

Trained at the Fine Arts Program at Concordia University, Baier has received national recognition for his work. Nicolas Baier: Recent Work was exhibited at Gallery TPW on from October 18 to November 17, 2001.
